What are some temperature related behaviors?  Why does my dragon have its mouth open?

  • Open mouth while sitting in hot spot, or having just left it is generally related to cooling/thermoregulating.  Bearded Dragons cool themselves by respiration through their mouths (panting), similar to dogs.

  • If your dragon is sitting in the corner of the enclosure and/or trying desperately to escape as far away from the heat as possible, the temperatures may be too high.

  • If your dragon never leaves the hot spot, is cool to the touch, doesn't eat, seems lazy/lethargic, not very active, the temperatures are likely too low.

  •  Nighttime temperatures should be allowed to fall to room temperature.  In the evenings all Bearded Dragon enclosure lights should be turned off, and temps should be allowed to drop to room temperature, to simulate a nighttime cool down period.  In the wild, Bearded Dragons experience hot days and cold nights.  They should experience the same thing in captivity.
